Multipurpose polymer

Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) Resin

A unique Tosoh-engineered plastic material that combines many of the best properties of plastics and metals. A functional polymer used in automotive applications for emission control components, lighting components, and fuel system parts. PPS resin has strong insulation and heat and chemical resistance properties. Consequently, it is used in the housings of the condenser in hybrid vehicles.

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries

Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide (EMD)

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are expected to become mainstream in electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and other eco-vehicles. The lithium manganese oxide (LMO) used for their cathodes demonstrates superb safety because of its stable chemical structure. EMD is one of the raw materials used in producing LMO.

Silica for battery separators

Wet-type Silica by Tosoh Silica Corporation

Wet-type silica is employed in the separators of automobile batteries. The silica contributes to improved battery performance.

Improving environmental performance

Zeolites

Zeolites contribute to cleaning the environment in a broad range of applications. In catalytic converters, they remove toxic substances, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, from automobile emissions. They also filter volatile organic compound (VOC) gases from work environments and gas emissions from semiconductor factories.

Reducing exhaust emissions

Yttria-stabilized Zirconia

Zirconia is utilized in sensors, fuel cells, and other components that assist in reducing exhaust emissions and improving fuel consumption.

Automobile dashboards

Propylene

Propylene is a key petrochemical produced as a co-product from Tosoh's ethylene plant. It is an essential ingredient in the production of polypropylene, and cumene.

Silica for energy-saving tires

Tosoh Silica Corporation

Energy-saving tires have been in the spotlight even more since the January 2010 start to a new labeling system for the fuel consumption performance of tires in Japan. Adding silica to tires reduces the tires’ rolling resistance on pavement. This improves automobile fuel consumption as much as 6%.

Automotive belts

extos®

Tosoh extos (alkylated chlorosulphonated polyethylene) has excellent dynamic and low temperature properties and is used in dynamic applications such as automotive belts and boots.

Automobile interiors

Amine catalysts

Tosoh's amine catalysts are indispensable in the manufacture of the polyurethane used in automobile interiors and many other applications. Tosoh has developed numerous amine catalysts with environmental concerns in mind. These include catalysts that do not use organic tin compounds or other heavy metal compounds, reactive catalysts that promote emissions-free production by suppressing catalyst vaporization and eliminating emissions into the environment, and catalysts suited to formulations that have very little effect on the ozone layer.

Tosoh provides automobile makers with high performance polymers and other materials that make for superior automobile components for an environmentally responsible age.
