Value Creation

Tosoh endeavors to build increasing value and to contribute to the resolution of societal issues while achieving sustainable growth to enhance its corporate value.

The company believes that its multifaceted contributions to society through its business activities are more important than anything else, and are the manifestation of its corporate philosophy: “Contribute to bettering society through the chemistry of innovation.”

In September 2015, the United Nations (UN) adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that it considers shared by all humankind, and goals we would work to resolve by 2030. Tosoh is currently focused on R&D in the life science, electronic materials, and environment and energy fields. The company has positioned eight of the 17 SDGs as goals it must work to resolve through its business activities, and has incorporated them into its R&D themes. The eight SDGs emphasized at Tosoh are Good Health and Well-Being; Clean Water and Sanitation; Affordable and Clean Energy; Industry; Innovation and Infrastructure; Responsible Consumption and Production; Climate Action; Life Below Water; and Life on Land.

Tosoh will contribute to resolving the societal issues inherent to these SDGs by exploiting its owned and developed technologies, by developing new technologies, and by cooperating and building relationships of trust with its stakeholders. It will thereby create unprecedented value for the company and its stakeholders and for society at large. Additionally, as Tosoh conducts business activities, it will cooperate and build relationships of trust with stakeholders through dialogue.

Tosoh Value Creation

The technologies we own and are constantly working to develop constitute a sound foundation for the creation of value. The medium-term business plan and key CSR issues help to dictate our direction, and the Tosoh Group Code of Conduct and the five tenets of Tosoh Spirit serve to underpin our efforts. Further guidance is provided by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria.

We will continue to cooperate with stakeholders and strengthen those relationships of trust. We will also work to achieve sustainable growth, and to contribute to the resolution of key societal issues such as the SDGs. These endeavors will bear fruit in the form of unprecedented value, which we return to society. Through these activities, while fulfilling our responsibilities as a company, we aim to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.

   SDG Goal Contribution

Commodity Products
Chlor-alkali Business

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), from Taiyo Vinyl Corporation

This resource-saving plastic, unlike other plastics, has salt as its principal raw material. Its production, moreover, results in low carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, making it an eco-friendly material.

6, 9

Rigid polyurethane foam

This material is used as insulation in construction and in refrigeration. It lowers energy consumption by improving the efficiency of residential air-conditioning systems and refrigerators.

13

Cement

Tosoh collects internally and externally generated waste and recycles it as a raw material for cement production.

12
Petrochemical Business

Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) film, used to encapsulate photovoltaic (PV) cells

This EVA film is crucial in encapsulating and protecting PV cells. It thereby contributes to the spread of renewable energy through means that do not emit CO2. 7

Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resin

This lightweight, high-performance PPS resin features superior heat and chemical resistance, dimensional stability, and electrical insulating properties. It therefore improves automotive fuel efficiency by lightening the weight and increasing the electrification of automobiles, contributing significantly to reducing energy usage and CO2 emissions.

13
Specialty Products
Advanced Materials

Silica, from Tosoh Silica Corporation

The addition of this silica to tires lowers the rolling resistance between the tire and the road surfaces and thereby improves automotive fuel efficiency.

13

High-silica zeolite

Amid the increasingly stringent regulation of exhaust gas worldwide, this high-performance catalyst meets the call for purifying automotive exhaust and preserving the environment.

3
Bioscience

AIA analyzers and reagents

This fully automated immunoassay equipment provides high-speed, high-sensitivity testing for various tumors and for endocrine and allergic issues and heart disease, therefor contributing to the medical care and health of people around the world.

3
Organic Chemicals

Heavy metal treatment agents

These treatment agents insolubilize hazardous heavy metals found in garbage incineration ash and in wastewater. They fulfill, moreover, a growing need for chemical agents for processing industrial waste, wastewater, and contaminated soil that are not harmful to people or the environment.
