Tosoh Announces Capacity Increase for Chloroprene Rubber (CR)

Tokyo, Japan— Tosoh announced its decision to increase its production capacity for chloroprene rubber (Skyprene®), part of the functional polymer product lineup of its Specialty business that the company manufactures, at its Nanyo Complex in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

CR produced from these facilities are used in the manufacture of automotive hoses and belts, industrial parts, and adhesives. In recent years, the supply–demand balance in the CR market continues to remain tight, driven especially by increasing demand for medical gloves1.

The company plans to take measures to renew its facilities in line with the expansion of its production capacity and will strive to ensure the stable supply of chloroprene rubber while responding to growing demand. Tosoh plans further expansions of the scale and profitability of its business going forward.

Details:

Location:  Nanyo Complex, Yamaguchi Prefecture
Facilities: CR manufacturing facilities
Annual Capacity:  37,000t (after debottlenecking)
Investment:  Approximately ¥5 billion
Construction Start:  August 2019
Completion:  October 2021

1 Medical Gloves: Rubber gloves which are mainly used in medical settings (e.g. during surgery and medical checkup). Conventional rubber gloves are usually made from natural rubber and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), which are not suitable for those with latex allergies. Medical gloves made from CR have grown in demand as a popular alternative to conventional rubber gloves as they have a low risk of triggering latex allergies while offering a better fit and comfort compared to gloves made from other kinds of synthetic rubber.
