Tokyo, Japan—Tosoh Corporation is pleased to announce its participation as a member of the Matsuri Project supported by the Green Innovation Fund, which is funded by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The Chitose Research Institute, Inc. (Chitose Institute) was selected to lead the project.
The theme "Building a Global Industry from Japan Based on the Direct Utilization of CO₂ by Photosynthesis" proposed by Chitose Institute aims to contribute to a carbon neutral society by implementing the production of chemicals such as bioplastics and functional materials, fuels, foods, and feeds made from microalgae. As a chemical manufacturer, Tosoh is examining the development of plastic products using microalgae-derived raw materials.
The Tosoh Group plans to continue to promote efforts to meet the challenge of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
Chitose Institute
The Chitose Institute is central to the Chitose Group, which consists of bio-venture companies leading the bioeconomy. The Chitose Institute was selected by NEDO as a recipient of the Green Innovation Fund, "Promotion of Carbon Recycling Using CO₂ as a Direct Raw Material through Biomonozukuri Technology." The theme proposed by Chitose was “Building a Global Industry from Japan Based on the Direct Utilization of CO₂ by Photosynthesis.”
Matsuri Project
The Matsuri Project mission is the establishment of an advanced microalgae-based industry. The Chitose Group has considerable expertise in large-scale microalgae production technologies. It will take the lead with Japanese companies and the government to build an algae industry that has never been achieved before. "Matsuri" means festival in Japanese, and Chitose is dedicated to supporting a festival that will develop a sustainable society.
