Tosoh Corporation Assumes Sole Sponsorship of the Akira Suzuki Awards

Tokyo, Japan—The 2010 Nobel Prize–winning chemist Akira Suzuki, professor emeritus of Hokkaido University, was a technical adviser to the Tosoh Group from 2008 to 2019. He guided the company’s research and development, and he wrote the preface to volume 61 of the “Tosoh Research and Technology Report” in 2017 and made other significant contributions to Tosoh’s information dissemination efforts through its recruitment materials, corporate social responsibility reports, coauthored technical papers, and more.

When Hokkaido University established the Akira Suzuki Awards to celebrate its former professor’s career achievements and to support academic progress in chemistry, Tosoh responded by becoming the sole corporate sponsor of the Akira Suzuki Awards.

The Akira Suzuki Awards are two awards bestowed annually by the University of Hokkaido on researchers who have achieved remarkable results in the development of chemical reactions, one in experimental chemistry (Akira Suzuki Award) and the other in computational (theoretical) chemistry and information science (ICReDD Award*). The recipients of these two awards have been selected, and the presentation ceremony and lectures will take place on March 12 and 13, 2022. For details, see the Hokkaido University website (https://www.global.hokudai.ac.jp/) and the Hokkaido University ICReDD website (https://www.icredd.hokudai.ac.jp/).

Tosoh will continue contributing to technological advancements in chemistry.

*The ICReDD, or Institute for Chemical Reaction Design and Discovery, was established at Hokkaido University in October 2018 as part of the World Premier International (WPI) Research Center Initiative funded by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

In aiming for new chemical reactions and materials, the ICReDD integrates computational science, information science, and experimental science. The resulting academic field of chemical reaction design and discovery strives to logically and efficiently develop chemical reactions.
