Tosoh to Launch Construction of a Biomass-Fired Power Plant at Nanyo Complex

Tokyo, Japan—Tosoh Corporation has decided to build a new biomass-fired power plant and close an aging coal-fired power plant at its Nanyo Complex in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture as part of its efforts to support the decarbonization of energy.

While the existing power plant mainly uses coal, the new biomass power plant will use waste fuels such as construction waste materials and RPF* in addition to wood fuels. The wide variety of fuels will allow Tosoh to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while making effective use of waste materials. In the future, Tosoh plans to burn biomass exclusively, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 500,000 tons per year.

The new biomass power plant is scheduled to start generating electricity in April 2026 and is expected to contribute significantly to the Tosoh Group achieving its GHG emissions reduction target of 30 percent by FY2031 compared to FY2019. The Group will continue to promote the reduction of CO2 emissions and the decarbonization of energy while working toward the challenge of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
