Tokyo, Japan—Tosoh Corporation today announced its decision to establish a local subsidiary in Vietnam and construct distillation and separation equipment (a “splitter”) for crude methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), an intermediate material for grades of MDI. The company plans to undertake commercial operation of the splitter in October 2026 in line with its plan to bolster its sales structure in Southeast Asia, a region that promises increased demand.

MDI distillation and separation process flow chart
MDI is the standard raw material for polyurethane, widely used in various applications, including the elastic fibers used in sports shoes and fitness wear, wood boards made from recycled materials, and heat-insulating materials. Demand for MDI in Southeast Asia, especially in Vietnam, has grown rapidly in recent years. Building a splitter in Vietnam will allow Tosoh to produce and supply MDI in a timely matter, boosting sales by tapping into robust local demand.
